“You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.”
— Maya Angelou
As the Art and Design lead at Willow Farm Primary School, I’m inspired by the creativity and imagination in our classrooms. I believe every child has a unique artistic voice, and we aim to nurture that confidence and curiosity from the very start of their journey with us.
Art and Design is an important part of our broad and balanced curriculum because it gives children the chance to explore, experiment and express themselves. Whether they are discovering new materials, studying the work of inspiring artists, or developing their own techniques, I love seeing the joy and pride that comes from creating something personal and meaningful.
We ensure that children:
- Explore ideas and record their experiences
- Become confident in drawing, painting, sculpture and a range of art, craft and design techniques
- Learn to evaluate and discuss creative work using appropriate vocabulary
- Gain knowledge of significant artists, craft makers and designers, and understand how art reflects different cultures and periods
Across the school, children are encouraged to take risks, try new approaches and enjoy the process of making art. From bold paintings to careful sketching, from clay modelling to mixed‑media projects, every child is supported to develop their skills and express their individuality.
